Age traffic light for more clarity

Jalk ID scan

Jalk ID-Scan is the name of the new app that allows bar staff to check the age of their young customers easily, quickly and securely. quickly, easily and safely. Thanks to Jalk ID-Scan, there is no need to do the maths when checking age, making the staff's job easier.

In Switzerland, spirits may not be sold to young people under the age of 18; beer and wine may not be sold to those under 16. Checking the age is always a problem for the staff, as it is often done in a hectic environment.

This repeatedly leads to alcohol being served to young people who have not reached the legally prescribed minimum age. This is despite the fact that the bar staff has checked the age of the customers.

The annually conducted alcohol test purchases also show that violations occur again and again in the sale of alcohol. For years, the rate in the category "bars" has been the highest compared to other places of sale.

In bars, for example, around one in three cases of alcohol being illegally supplied to young people occurred in 2019. In bars, it is often particularly difficult to distinguish between underage and adult youths due to the circumstances.

The Blue Cross has therefore had an app developed in cooperation with the Federal Customs Administration to support staff in age verification.

With Jalk ID-Scan, as the app is called, bar staff - or even the bouncer - can check the age of young customers quickly and reliably using their ID documents. The app works regardless of the light situation, as the mobile phone's torch is automatically activated when the app is used.

Jalk ID Scan can be downloaded free of charge to any smartphone and works as follows: Sales staff scan the identity document (ID card, passport, driving licence or residence permit). The app displays the result within seconds according to a traffic light system:

  • "Red": No alcoholic beverage may be sold to the customer (under 16 years of age) at all.
  • "Orange": The customer is between 16 and 18 years old and is allowed to buy fermented drinks (beer, wine, cider), but not drinks containing spirits.
  • "Green": The customer is older than 18 years and is therefore allowed to buy all kinds of alcoholic beverages.

Data protection guaranteed

Since no photos are taken and no data is stored when the ID is scanned, the app also complies with data protection requirements. The recorded age information is deleted again immediately. The result of the check is only visible once, for a few seconds on the device.

An important advantage of the app is that it also works in flight mode, without a connection to a network. It can therefore easily be used in a bar or club in the basement.

Jalk IDScan is now available free of charge for all interested parties and can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play.
