Hotel of the Year 2027

The Appenzeller Huus is impressive in every way

Cuisine in a league of its own, seven wine cellars, a spa that’s second to none: With a great deal of patience, passion, and about 120 million Swiss francs, former financial entrepreneur Jan Schoch has created a resort that blends seamlessly into the village landscape yet is packed with attractions, some of which are truly one-of-a-kind.

The combination of a cutting-edge spa (2,200 m² spread across three levels) and exceptional cuisine has earned the Appenzeller Huus the title of GaultMillau’s “Hotel of the Year 2027.” The Appenzeller Huus consists of the Huus Löwen (1878), the Huus Bären (1602, the oldest building in Gonten), and the newly built Huus Quell (2025). The Huus Quell is constructed using the traditional Appenzell timber-frame method and made of Appenzell “moon wood”—without nails or screws.
