Chef de Bar, Kaspar, Lucerne

Short and sweet: Rafael Mühlethaler

Once a globetrotter, Rafael Mühlethaler is currently settled in Lucerne, as Chef de Bar at Kaspar. He gives us a short and succinct impression of his life.
After about four to five years of drifting around in world history, Rafael felt the need to put down roots and ended up in the "Kaspar".

My name is Rafael Mühlethaler, I was born in 1985 and grew up in Littau, Lucerne. After school, I started my apprenticeship as a retail assistant at Musik Hug. Unfortunately, the recording market went into a steep decline soon after and I ended up in the restaurant business by chance. My first job was at "La Bonne Cave", and a little later I started working in a club at the same time. After about two years, I took a year off to travel China and Southeast Asia from Shanghai.

But then I got stuck in Shanghai, attended a language school there and made a round trip of China towards the end. Back in Switzerland, I spent winter seasons in Laax and Davos, and during the summer I mostly stayed in Lucerne.

After drifting around the world for about four to five years, I felt the need to put down roots and, after stations such as the White Castle (and its neighbour), Hotel Giardino in Zurich, Weisses Schaf and the Seebar (KKL), I landed at "Kaspar", where I currently work 100 per cent.

Who would I like to serve a drink to?
I would have liked to mix Winston Churchill a martini. I wonder what he would say about my gin-vermouth ratio.

I like it / makes me happy
Happy guests. That is also somehow contagious.

I don't like it at all / makes me sad
Lack of appreciation. Doesn't explicitly apply only to the bar, but in general.

What luxury do I afford myself occasionally?
A really nice meal.

A world without Facebook, Twitter and Co. would be . . . ?
I grew up without all that and would have done well without it.

The last "hundred Stutz" and 24 hours time. What do I do?
I go to the casino, order a good whisky and bet CHF 50 on red.

My last holidays were where?
Bar Convent Berlin

What temptation can I not resist?
The question is rather, what temptation could I resist . . .

Three character traits that define me?
I am mischievous, lively and full of life.

Sport means a lot to me?
In the past? A lot, especially team sports. In winter I still ski or snowboard a lot. Otherwise, sport for me mainly means "watching football".

My favourite drink
(Rum) Old Fashioned
