Bar am Wasser - with a unique bar team to victory

The Bar am Wasser was already successful at the SWISS BAR AWARDS in 2019. At that time, it was awarded Best Newcomer Bar. In September 2020, the bar team will be called to the winner's podium of the SWISS BAR AWARDS.

The success of a bar is largely dependent on teamwork. This year, the SWISS BAR AWARDS are presenting the Best Bar Team award for the first time. To highlight the importance of unanimous teamwork in front of and behind the bar, in the back office or in the kitchen for the benefit of an excellent bar.

Dirk Hany and his team's Bar am Wasser wins in this category, holding its own against Zurich's Cinchona Bar and Basel's Hinz und Kunz Bar. The award for best bar team in Switzerland means an incredible amount to bar manager Dirk Hany.

He attributes this award - he also wins the title Barkeeper of the year 2020 - entirely to the staff and the team spirit: "We have been the same since we opened and a unique team that stands for the success of Bar am Wasser ".

Constant sextet

Dirk, Flurin, Sascha, Lius, Dominik and Vanessa, assistant manager - a sextet that has been making the bar a success side by side for two years. During this time, the initial team has almost doubled to eleven employees. Hardly surprising, since the rush to the bar, which is known in Zurich for being impossible to get into, doesn't seem to be dying down.

"It turned out better than initially imagined," Hany recalls. To run the thriving bar concept in its entirety with lots of gold, lime blue velvet and brown tones at the highest level, the team must also want to shine in their involvement and act in a networked manner.

Responsibility for motivation and self-esteem

Shining behind the bar as a mixologist is a coveted position that you have to work for and beat many tempos at the bar on the banks of the Limmat, from barback to waiter to bartender.

"This guarantees that we all follow the same path and offer the same quality. I try to give each employee responsibility. That is extremely important for motivation and self-esteem," Hany finds.

There is no gridlock for anyone who helps steer the Bar am Wasser . Each team member is responsible for his or her own work, with positions alternating according to situation and need.

Wanting to be involved in the Bar am Wasser, whose equipment also includes illustrious kitchen appliances such as a rotary evaporator or a centrifuge, always starts with your own initiative.

"I work with people who also want to work for me. Who are brave enough to take the initiative and dare to take a step in our direction," says the ambitious bar operator, who does not approach anyone in this regard. He is happy to recommend interesting applicants whom he cannot employ at Bar am Wasser to other colleagues.

The currently existing bar menu is characterised throughout by "exclusively own creations from teamwork. All staff from all areas have contributed a cocktail". The menu reflects a liquid world menu that offers drinks, spirits, special ingredients or performance styles of cocktails from around the world.

Including non-alcoholic cocktails and those in the low ABV range with intense flavours. Another team effort initiated during the Corona Lockdown is Bar am Wasser-TV, which plans to continue broadcasting via YouTube channel in the future. "In the past two years, we have achieved a lot together.
