Poetry artwork for liquids

Atelier Classic Bar, Thun, wins Best Bar Menu 2021

Condensed drink characteristics, taboo-free storytelling, familiar quotes and drawings - the bar menu of Thun's Atelier Classic Bar, screwed into leather, speaks volumes. At the SWISS BAR AWARDS 2021, the 5th edition of the "Manege der liquiden Poesie" was awarded Best Bar Menu in Switzerland.

Sarah Jessica Parker aka Carrie Bradshaw says in the hit series Sex and the City: "Men may have discovered fire, but women know how to play with it".

Ivan Urech, host of the Atelier Classic Bar in Thun's old town, has also seen the US series: "Not to learn to understand women. But if a series or a film hits, why shouldn't I see it?" In the bar menu of the Atelier Classic Bar, the quote refers to the liquid series drink "Cosmopolitan."

As a quotation, it can be found in a series of well-known passages from film and television, bon mots from famous personalities or personal stories that Ivan Urech has written down over the past five years.

In the meantime, his bar reading comprises almost 80 pages: as a complete work of art, this arena of liquid poetry was voted Best Bar Menu at this year's SWISS BAR AWARDS.

A story awakens new drinking desires

"There can't be good living, where there is no good drinking", Benjamin Franklin is also quoted in it. In the industrial chic bar on three levels below the Schlossberg in Thun, not only one of the founding fathers of the United States of Good Drinking found what he was looking for.

In different ways, women and men, groups or couples encounter the multifaceted and extensive work that speaks volumes and offers entertainment as well as reading pleasure. Some guests tend to sink into Urech's map, which can confidently be understood as a book of short stories about cocktails.

"By telling stories about drinks, guests also get to know drinks that they might not have prioritised based on the ingredients alone," Ivan Urech can imagine. Having the feeling of not drinking according to declared ingredients also gives bar visitors new cocktail experiences.

"Take me", is the seduction to the porn star Martini with a line from the amorous film "50 Shades of Grey", which Ivan Urech has of course also seen. This wish is then expressed rather rarely.

"Rather, some ladies point their fingers at it and blush," says the manager, who already points out in the preface that the ironically written card may contain traces of sarcasm, eroticism, hazelnuts and vulgar expletives.

Each Manege der Poesie is handmade - one of a kind

The content density of the "Atelier Liquids" consists of 23 chapters, from predinners, sours or after dinners to non-alcoholic drinks and individual spirit categories. Every single Manege der Poesie is unique, handmade by the team of the Atelier Classic Bar itself.

The individual pages are wrapped in starched leather from the tannery around the corner and fastened only with two screws so that new drinks can be added from time to time. The lettering Atelier embossed in a metal plate on the cover of the book already tells the story of a creative cocktail forge.

The bar team writes seasonal cocktails or daily recommendations on the mirror opposite the bar. Regional professionals such as Simone Hirsbrunner (design) and tattoo artist Noreen Benham, who is responsible for some of the black-and-white drawings, are also involved in the production of the unique bar cards.

In the final competition for the Best Bar Menu 2021 award, the Atelier Classic Bar successfully achieved first place alongside the cards of the Zurich Bar am Wasser and Verve by Sven Bar in the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz. And by the way: Sex and the City has recently been continued as "And just like that".
