At the same time, the volume of pure alcohol sold in wine has decreased from 5.6 to 4.1 liters per capita over this period. By contrast, sales of beer, spirits and fruit wine have remained relatively constant over the last 20 years, except in 2020 and 2021, when sales of beer have declined somewhat.

In 2021, the amount of pure alcohol sold in beer is 2.9 liters, in spirits 1.5 liters and in fruit wine 0.1 liters per capita. In 2021, this corresponds to a total per capita of around 50 bottles of wine at 0.75 liters, 120 cans of beer at 0.5 liters, 5.3 bottles of spirits at 0.7 liters and 3 bottles of fruit wine at 0.75 liters (figures not shown).

In terms of shares of pure alcohol sold, wine has the largest share at 48.2 percent in 2021. Alcohol in beer accounts for 33.6 percent of pure alcohol sold, in spirits 17.5 percent and in fruit wine 0.7 percent.

Definition of the calculation

Sales are calculated from domestic production (tax data, declared distillations) plus imports, minus exports. The methodology for calculating the indicator is based on the World Health Organization's definition of total alcohol consumed in a country at a given time.

These figures are estimates. The quantity taxed does not correspond exactly to the quantity consumed. These figures do not take into account consumption in travel, own consumption by producers or the black market.
