Interview with Michael Zotter

90 partner brands, over 50 recipes submitted and a final with 24 top bartenders. The SWISS COCKTAIL OPEN 2021 was such a success that one almost forgot that it was a premiere.

BAR NEWS: What were the considerations for launching another cocktail competition?
Our aim was to launch a competition that did not yet exist in this form. In addition, we decided to launch it at a time when nothing was happening in the bar scene due to Corona. We also wanted to facilitate networking between bartenders and producers.

How does the SWISS COCKTAIL OPEN differ from other competitions, e.g. the SWISS BAR AWARDS?
While the SWISS BAR AWARDS primarily focus on the bars and Barkeeper , the SWISS COCKTAIL OPEN is primarily about the cocktails.

Our aim was to launch a competition that did not yet exist in this form.

A Tale of Two Cities is now considered the "Best Cocktail in Switzerland 2021". What criteria does a drink have to fulfil to deserve this title?
Basically, it has to meet the criteria of the regulations first, then it depends on the jury's assessment. Such a drink certainly needs a balance in which the ingredients and the visuals flow harmoniously into each other.

What was your personal highlight of this premiere?
It is difficult to pick out just one highlight. What we were particularly pleased about was the number of participating partners and bartenders. The final with 24 bartenders was an eventful moment.

An unforgettable premiere

There haven't been many of those in recent months. Moments when the bar scene in Switzerland came together. Making contacts and cultivating friendships - both have been in short supply lately. But even if there was an urgent need to catch up in terms of social exchange at the 1st SWISS COCKTAIL OPEN, it was first and foremost about the most beautiful pastime in the world: cocktails.

What do you wish for the next event?
That we no longer have the Corona restrictions so that we can hold the event on a larger scale. We also hope that we can inspire even more partners and even more Barkeeper for the competition. If we can believe the reactions to the premiere, we can be confident that we will succeed.
